In 2001, when the Rapids defeated D.C. United 3-1, all three goals came from John Spencer, thereby making him the first player in club history to score a hattrick. His first goal came after 48 seconds, off a second assist of the season for goalkeeper Scott Garlick.
The following year, Chris Carrieri replaced Jeff Stewart at halftime with the Rapids trailing Chicago Fire 1-0. He remains one of just four players in league history to score a hattrick after coming on as a substitute. The Rapids won 3-2 in front of a record 61,202.
